DESIGN & PROJECT FEATURES: This historic barn was built in 1864 from second-hand materials. Over the next 140 years it saw a number of alterations and damage from the elements. We repaired the frame, repointed the stone foundation and enclosed the building in SIP panels to create a climatized space. We designed a conversion with four floor levels to house a wood-working studio featuring machine rooms & integrated dust-collection, rooms for layout and hand tool work, office space, materials storage, a kitchenette, and guest quarters. We made the barn a model of efficiency, installing a radiant heat and cooling system integrated with geothermal wells. Even with all the modern updates, we kept a strong focus on preserving the building's historic appeal and it remains a treasured landmark of the surrounding community.
TYPE OF PROJECT: Timber Frame barn restoration and conversion.
