Riverbend Timber Framing Showhouse in Grand Central Terminal, NY
Blissfield, MI, August 2001 -- Riverbend Timber Framing, a national leader in the design and manufacture of timber frame structures, joins Country Home Magazine to build the first ever showhouse in Grand Central Terminal, New York City.
This marks the second occasion Riverbend has worked with the magazine in presenting a showhouse. In 1996, Riverbend along with architect Dennis Wedlick, created Country Home's showhouse inside the Mall of America in Minneapolis.
This year's showhouse is again designed by architect Dennis Wedlick and is actually two showhouses in one, a country cottage along with a city penthouse apartment. Riverbend provides the timber frame for the 1200 square foot country cottage. The cottage is designed to be reminiscent of an old farmhouse, and fits the showhouse concept of a weekend retreat. Riverbend's frame of heavy oak timber gives the cottage a warm and romantic feel as well as being strong and spacious.
The actual frame was raised by hand with the help of volunteers from the Habitat for Humanity, a partner in the project. In earlier times, raisings were a community event in the country. It's a rare occasion to hand-raise a frame today. Craftsmen will routinely use cranes to lift the bents and beams into place, not an option for the unique setting of Grand Central Terminal. The hand raising in Grand Central Terminal is an event that easily fits with the concept of country coming to the city.
