January’s Timber Frame of the Month: The Lighthouse Cabin
Timber Frame Constructed by Blue Ox Timber Frames, Ltd. out of Alexandria, MN.
Joe and Anita Laurin of Badger, MN purchased a lot on Flag Island in the Northwest Angle. They wanted to build something unique with a lookout tower for their cabin retreat. The Laurin’s came to us with their ideas and we went to work to create their vision. The frame is constructed out of white pine timbers that had to be trucked across the ice from Young’s Bay to the construction site. In approximately 4 days, the Blue Ox Timber Frames crew erected the timber beams, some as long as 34 feet in a clockwise fashion. There are exactly 54 steps that zigzag from the ground level to the top of the cabin floor. The design of the Observatory Deck allows for views in all directions. The interior houses all the modern conveniences and a rock climbing wall to boot. The Lauren’s wanted unique and unique is definitely what they got!
